Embassy of Hungary in Belgrade

The Embassy of Hungary in Belgrade represents Hungary in Serbia, transmits messages of the Hungarian government to the government of Serbia and vice versa. It informs the Capital about important political, social, economical, military and other events happening in the host country. It prepares international treaties and official state visits.

Hungary established diplomatic relations with the former Yugoslavia in 1946. Our relations with the then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia were upgraded to ambassadorial level in 1996, after the break-up of Yugoslavia, and since 3 June 2006 we have had relations between Hungary and the Republic of Serbia. Bilateral relations started to develop significantly after the turn of the millennium. In August 2001, Hungary opened its Consulate General in Subotica, and the network of Honorary Consulates in the rest of the country has also started to develop and is currently being expanded. In order to improve cultural relations, the Collegium Hungaricum in Belgrade was opened in 2014 to promote Hungarian culture in Serbia, filling a gap that had existed for several decades.
Hungary's and Serbia's heads of state and leading politicians hold regular bilateral meetings and hold consultations in international fora and at the United Nations. The high level of political relations is demonstrated by the annual Hungarian-Serbian governmental summit, which has been an exceptional event in diplomacy since 2014. During joint government meetings, ministry leaders discuss cooperation on economic, infrastructure, energy, national policy, education, science, culture, home affairs, defence and EU affairs, in addition to political issues.

One of the most important links between Hungary and Serbia is the issue of minorities in the two countries. The Hungarian Government considers the protection of the interests and improvement of the situation of Hungarians in Vojvodina to be a priority task. After lengthy negotiations, the Hungarian diplomacy succeeded in autumn 2011 in having the Serbian Parliament amend the Serbian law on the rehabilitation of property, which contains discriminatory elements for the Hungarian population. In addition to the above steps, Hungary provides significant support to the Serbian minority living in the country to preserve their language and culture.

Following the settlement of the Hungarian minority issue, Budapest is a committed supporter of Serbia's EU accession aspirations. In addition to political support, this is the umpteenth Hungarian expert to advise the Serbian Government on its EU accession process. Negotiations with Serbia started in 2014, and Budapest's goal is for the country to conclude them as soon as possible and become a full member of the European Union.

Due to their geographical proximity, the two countries have a significant external trade turnover, which has been steadily increasing in volume in recent years. Bilateral economic relations are also developing steadily, with Hungarian investments in Serbia showing dynamic growth. The Hungarian Government's constant objective is to facilitate border traffic, which is also taking place in the context of increased border control tasks due to the migration crisis, in order to respect Schengen obligations. The number and capacity of border crossing points are continuously being improved in this spirit. The aim is to remove unnecessary and unjustified administrative obstacles to rail, road and waterborne transport between the two countries, which is essential for the free movement of persons and goods. To support economic cooperation, Hungary employs specialised foreign economic diplomats in its diplomatic missions in Serbia.
