Eszterházy Károly Catholic University

Eszterházy Károly Catholic University - further EKCU - is a prestigious Hungarian higher education institution established in 1774, operating in the historic city of Eger and in Jászberény.

About the University

With over 9,000 students and approximately 400 academic staff, the University represents a balanced integration of academic heritage and innovation-driven development. Its strategic mission is to provide high-quality education, foster international cooperation, and contribute to regional and societal advancement through applied research and knowledge transfer.
The University hosts internationally recognised research centres and maintains strong partnerships with industry, public institutions, and international academic networks. Particular excellence has been achieved in viticulture and oenology, supporting sustainable agriculture in the Carpathian Basin, as well as in sustainability-related programmes connected to the implementation of Hungary’s National Energy and Climate Plan.
The institution has more than two centuries of distinguished tradition in art education and is also recognised for its outstanding university sport performance nationally.
Through its six faculties — Humanities, Economics and Social Sciences, Informatics, Pedagogy, Natural Sciences, and Visual Arts and Music — the University offers a broad academic portfolio and welcomes cooperation in education, research, and mobility programmes worldwide.

The main profile of the institution - based on its decades-long tradition - is teacher training. The name of the university is attached to the Complex Basic Programme, which is meant to implement the methodological renewal of public education in Hungary, as well as the implementation of the highly practice-oriented Eszterházy Pedagogical Training Model.

Internationally recognized knowledge centres and research groups operate at the university where our researchers conduct applied research with the involvement of economic actors in the region and the support of domestic and international projects. Internationally recognized research in the field of viticulture and winemaking effectively serves sustainable farming in the entire Carpathian basin. As the only domestic higher education institution, the university participates in the 9-year LIFE integrated project of the Ministry of Energy, the aim of which is to support the implementation of the National Energy and Climate Plan. The Coal Commission Secretariate, responsible for coordination and attitude formation, operates in the institution.

Eszterházy Károly Catholic University has been renowned for its art education for over two hundred years and the University's current range of art courses can also proudly claim to be one of the country's most outstanding art training and art mediation institutions. With its outstanding results, EKCU is one of the best sport universities in Hungary.
