The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a miracle of modern science and engineering. It is the world's most powerful telescope ever built, which will help humanity to understand the origins of the universe and our place in it. The Hungarian astronomer, Örs Hunor Detre works on this grandiose project, and he will share his experience and the latest findings of JWST at the next Alumni Hungary Webinar on 17 May.
About the presenter:
Örs Hunor Detre is a physicist and astronomer. As a scientist with an engineer's heart, he has been working on James Webb Space Telescope for 15 years as the Electrical Lead of the Mid Infrared Instrument (MIRI). He is one of the 10.000 scientists and engineers who helped the birth of JWST, hold her hand during its journey onto orbit, and was present during her first heartbeats. He is a member of the testing, commissioning, and science team of MIRI. He has been working at Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Heidelberg, Germany since 2008.

The James Webb Space Telescope is an infrared space telescope with a giant, 6.5-meter primary mirror, the successor of the famous Hubble Space Telescope. Webb is truly among the greatest technical challenges of mankind. Its size is enormous, even its primary and secondary mirrors had to be folded to fit into a rocket. It was launched on 2021 Christmas, with a roaring Ariane 5 rocket, and then had to be unfolded in space with unprecedented precision. The challenges did not end here, the commissioning is still ongoing until 2022 Summer. Webb has become a new, unparalleled eye of mankind, capable of seeing the most distant galaxies of our Universe. This webinar will reveal the challenges of the development, and what we have already seen and will be able to see with Webb.
