Would you like to know how to tell a powerful story? Are you interested in how an idea can reach worldwide success? At the November edition of the Alumni Hungary Webinar Series, we will take you behind the scenes of the Oscar-winning Hungarian short film, Sing (Mindenki, 2016) with an exclusive presentation of the film’s director, Kristóf Deák.
Kristof Deak (1982, Budapest) is a Hungarian film director, screenwriter, film producer and editor who created the short film Sing, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the 89th Academy Awards in 2017. He studied at the Hungarian University of Theatre and Film in Budapest (2003-2006) and worked in the industry as an editor before moving to London to study directing at the University of Westminster’s MA programme. After winning the Oscar, his subsequent short film Best Game Ever also went on to win several international awards. He is currently developing his first feature film, The Grandson which will be released in early 2022.
In his presentation, Kristóf will walk the audience through his process of finding the core to a story worth telling - and the meticulous process of unpacking characters and plot that follows using his Oscar-winning short film Sing as a case study. He will address topics such as:
- Why do we tell stories - why has it been so important for humans since the dawn of civilisation?
- How can I tell if my story will work? A brilliant filter to use.
- What works in a film - and what doesn’t?
- Utilising archetypes and avoiding clichés
- The logic of emotions
- Raising stakes in your scenes
- The two greatest enemies of a good story - and how to steer clear of them
