Meet our alumni volunteers: Oqba Basal

The time has come to introduce our international alumni volunteer team with 34 people from 17 countries speaking 23 different languages. In the third chapter of our volunteer series, you can read Oqba Basal’s story from Syria! He studied in Hungary between 2016-2020 at the University of Debrecen and now he’s a lecturer at the Department of Applied Plant Biology.

Why did you choose Hungary and the University of Debrecen?

I was awarded the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship to do my PhD study in a Hungarian university, and the University of Debrecen had the most suitable doctoral program for my previous studies. Besides, the University of Debrecen is one of the top-rated universities in Hungary and even in the world when it comes to my field of study (agriculture).

How did you like your studies? What was your favourite memory during your studies?

No words can describe enough how happy and motivated I was during my study. Everyone in my department was so helpful and supportive, starting with my supervisor, not to mention the other teachers and colleagues. I have an enormous number of great memories, but I can still remember the warm congratulations from my supervisor when I got my first prize as the best presenter at an international conference, and the encouragement I received from my department head after my first scientific article was accepted in a well-ranked international journal.

How did you like the country?

The kindness and helpfulness, which was surrounded around me during my study period made me fall in love with the country not so long after my relocation in here. That actually was one of the main reasons that made me decide to settle down here in Hungary after graduation.

Did you have any difficulties with the Hungarian culture? What was that and how did you handle it?

Well I wouldn’t call it “difficulties” but rather “challenges”, and yes, there were some. One of the first challenges was language, as not many locals speak English, but I could handle it with the help of the technology (smartphone, internet, translation) until I reached a fair level of Hungarian language which, itself, was another challenge. On the other hand, I could easily engage myself with the Hungarian culture, as I find it very unique and lovely.

How does the Hungarian culture differ from the Syrian culture?

Both cultures are kind of “spiritual” I’d say. However, Hungary is a European country, whereas Syria is a Middle-Eastern country, that’s why you find some differences in the everyday culture (food, work, leisure activities). I need to mention, however, that both Hungarian and Syrian cuisines share the tendency towards fatty and spicy foods!

You are among alumni volunteers. Why did you apply for that position? What's your task and how do you manage it? What do you think about the Alumni Network Hungary?

As I had a very positive experience during my study period in Hungary, I thought it’d be beneficial to join the group of alumni and share my tiny experience with the prospective students. At the same time, I find it a good opportunity for me to keep in touch with other alumni and exchange experiences, especially with the fact that I’m staying in Hungary. I think it’s a great thing that the Alumni Network Hungary is here to connect the alumni, share their experiences and advice, and to introduce a platform of knowledge for current and prospective alumni about Hungary and its culture, science and possible job opportunities.

What's your plan for the future?

I already got a job as an assistant professor in my faculty, and my plans are to keep improving my scientific career and to further engage myself with this amazing community.
