My half-marathon medal

What object best reflects your connection to Hungary? What emotions and memories does it evoke? In our new series, volunteers of Alumni Network Hungary will tell the stories behind their specific mementos. First up is Ayşegül from Turkey

If I had to pick one object that really shows my connection to Hungary, it would be my half-marathon medal. At first, it might just look like a race souvenir, but for me it is so much more. It carries four years of learning, growing, and feeling supported in a country that slowly became like a second home.

In the second year of my PhD, one of the toughest moments was preparing for the comprehensive exam, the last big exam before you start writing your dissertation. My second year was intense: constant reading, learning languages, and attending classes. I set a big goal for myself—running a half-marathon. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, I went running. It became my way to clear and calm my mind. Day by day, I kept telling myself, “I can do this.” My professors, fellow students, and local friends encouraged me every step of the way.

That support made all the difference.

Race day in Budapest in the spring of 2023 was unforgettable. We started running on green Margaret Island, crossed the bridges, and headed toward Buda Castle. It felt like discovering historic Budapest all over again. Along the way, there were so many small joys: couples pushing baby strollers, cheering spectators holding banners with encouraging words like “Hajrá!”, and musicians performing on the streets. Sure, it got tough at times, but the joy and pride at the finish line made it all worth it.

This medal is a reminder of what Hungary gave me: challenges, growth, and a supportive community. If you are thinking about studying here, know that it is a place where you can push yourself, feel inspired, and truly belong.
