Autonomous driving technology is rapidly developing, and it completely changes the automotive industry, transportation, and our everyday lives. We interviewed the presenter of the September edition of the Alumni Hungary Webinar Series, Professor Zsolt Szalay, the Head of the Department of Automotive Technologies at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and the Head of Research and Innovation of ZalaZONE Automotive Proving Ground on this increasingly growing industry.

Dr Orsolya Benedek fondly remembers the 1990s, when she was a student at the Medical University of Pécs. Orsolya is currently working at the University of Rostock at the Institute of Medical Microbiology, Virology and Hygiene as a specialist, instructor, head of quality management, and director of the hygiene- and water microbiology laboratory. The time has come to introduce our international alumni volunteer team with 34 people from 17 countries speaking 23 different languages. He did his doctoral research in Hungary between 2017-2021 at the University of Miskolc, and now he continues his academic carrier.

Space research is aimed to be an increasingly important field in the scientific portfolio of the University of Debrecen. UD has recently been visited by the first Hungarian cosmonaut, where he learned about the university’s space research program that includes solutions for long-term stay in space, space diet and sustainable cultivation practices among others.

In July the presenter of the Alumni Hungary Webinar Series was the internationally acclaimed ethologist, Ádám Miklósi, the head of the Ethology Department and the director of the Institute of Biology at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE). In his webinar, Professor Miklósi showed how ethology, the scientific study of animal behavior, can help the development of social robots.

An international student team of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) won a special award for their project entitled “WIMCY – Welcome into My Church Yard” at the prestigious Urban Design Award international contest. More than two hundred surgeries are performed in Hungary every year to correct the developmental disorder known as the funnel chest that affects every six thousandth child. Recently, a process with 3D printing has been developed in Pécs, with the cooperation of doctors, engineers, 3D designers and metalworking professionals. The University of Pécs made an interview with thoracic surgeon Dr Zalán Szántó who invented the new method that has a huge opportunity in surgical procedures.

In June we had a super exciting Alumni Hungary Webinar with the internationally acclaimed biologist Csaba Pál, who is the senior researcher of the Szeged Biological Research Center. We caught him for a quick interview.

There are many news stories and articles that talk about Hungarian inventions and famous Hungaricums, but Hungarian women in science are less known. Thanks to their talent and perseverance, they have all achieved some kind of revolutionary in healthcare, education, or even scientific research. Be inspired by their short story and learn the secret of long life, because most of them reached old age (more than 90 years)!
