Background and history of the corporation or institution
Budapest Waterworks is the water utility services provider of the Hungarian capital city since 1868.
Our core activities cover a wide range of water services, including drinking water production, treatment and distribution to more than 2 million people, as well as waste water treatment, and related services.
Using our experience in the core fields, we launched international activities in the mid-2000s focusing on water and waste water facility construction projects and consultancy services to utility operators. Our areas of expertise cover corporate technical and financial audit, masterplanning, increasing operational efficiency, development of non-revenue water (NRW) reduction strategies, development of efficient customer services, improving revenue collection, design and implementation of SCADA system, or energy efficiency improvement – to mention but a few.
Our references in the construction area include the rehabilitation and extension of two water treatment plants, Kalatuwawa and Labugama in Sri Lanka, or the installation of 36 water treatment units in 36 locations, 4 islands of Indonesia. Our experience as an operator benefits the projects implemented as well as our partners.
Beside constructions, we also provide services in several consultancy fields helping other utilities improve their performance and develop their capacities.
We have worked on several consultancy assignments in the world. The technical assessment and later on the elaboration of a masterplan for the water utility company, UKT of the Albanian capital city, Tirana, lay down the medium-to-long term technical development and investment needs and directions of the company, in line with its vision of improving the quality of services. Our recommendations, an outcome that incorporates both our experience and the local operator’s aspects, can be implemented by the utility company alone or with little help. During the Financial and Operational Performance Improvement Programme for Belgrade Waterworks and Sewerage in Serbia, in a project financed by the EBRD, our colleagues did not only work on the recommendations for improvement in several fields of the operations, but also supported the colleagues of the Serbian water utility company in implementing those proposals. In a three-year programme started in 2022, funded by the EU and monitored by the UN-Habitat GWOPA, our company supports two mentee operators (in Lahore and Mardan) in Pakistan in their efficiency improvement.
