Dear Visitor,
Hungary and the Hungarian people have been present in St. Petersburg since the founding of the city. Tokaji wine was already known and appreciated at the court of Peter the Great. In the 19th century, Mihály Zichy’s illustrations captured the everyday life of the Tsarist court. Renowned artists such as Franz Liszt and Béla Bartók performed concerts in the city.
At the beginning of the 21st century, as a sign of strengthening economic cooperation, several Hungarian companies opened offices in St. Petersburg, including OTP Bank, Richter Gedeon and EGIS pharmaceutical companies, Robinson Tours, the 1000 Út travel agency, and the electronic company Vertesz.
Each year, more and more people from St. Petersburg and its surroundings travel to Hungary for leisure, especially to visit the thermal spas. Likewise, when Hungarian tourists travel to Russia, St. Petersburg is usually their primary destination.
Hungarian musicians are regular participants in cultural festivals in St. Petersburg. Every year, a Hungarian theater company performs in the city, and theaters from St. Petersburg are also frequently welcomed in Hungary. We are especially pleased that Hungarian is taught at Saint Petersburg State University.
Hungary is represented at a high level at major international conferences held in St. Petersburg—such as the legal forum in May, the economic forum in June, and the cultural forum in December. To further strengthen cooperation, Budapest and St. Petersburg signed a cooperation agreement in December 2015, followed by a similar agreement between Hungary's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the city of St. Petersburg in March 2016.
