Celebrating the Hungarian Poetry Day with the Alumni Volunteer team

The Hungarian Poetry Day is on a different day than the World Poetry Day and it’s celebrated on 11 April in 2022. It’s celebrated on the anniversary of József Attila’s birthday, who is among the most famous Hungarian poets. On this day we celebrate culture, reading and writing poems all around the world. The aim of this event is to support linguistic diversity by sharing famous poems or even sharing our own. To celebrate together, we asked the new international Alumni Volunteer team to share their favourite poems and why they like or wrote them.

Damilia Arzybekova: I was on my way to Szentendre and somehow needed to kick the time. Hence, I wrote a poem with a few facts about Hungary

While sitting on a Train.. ( own poem)

While sitting on a Train 🚂 *-*
A poem came into my brain,
About the place where now I stay-
Country named Magyarország
In the mornings - Jó reggelt!☀️
If it’s evening-Jó estét!
Simple thanking- Köszönöm;
And if you like it-Szeretem💗
By the way, it’s not the end👀.
Let me go through the desserts:
One of the famous is Dobos,
Then it goes Esterházy;
You can try rétes as well,
Somlói galuska sounds strange.
You should try Kürtőskalács,
With the ice cream is the best!💫

Manish Kumar: In this poem, “Birds of the free skies”, the poet says that we shouldn’t cage birds as gods have given them wings. This poem is very relatable to human life that we should also not cage or restrict anyone's talents and encourage and motivate them to soar and fly higher in life. If we restrict anyone from doing what nature has given them like birds, they will die soon.

Shivmangal Singh Suman

हम पंछी उन्मुक्त गगन के Birds of the free skies

To blend with the endless horizon
These wings shall thrash and throe,
To be one with that same horizon
Or only to be no more.

Pay no heed to the tree-bough
Destroy and wreck my shelter
but if god has given me these wings
Do not distress these frantic flights.

Mariia Shabalina: This poem evokes very nostalgic emotions in me. My brother showed me this poem before he left our parents’ house. I feel this poem as - people can sacrifice everything that they have for love, even their dreams. Having discarded all material values, dreams are one of the most important and “expensive” in a people’s life. For me, it is the highest point of love when you are sharing your dreams.

William Butler Yeats: Aedh Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,

Enwrought with golden and silver light,

The blue and the dim and the dark cloths

Of night and light and the half light,

I would spread the cloths under your feet:

But I, being poor, have only my dreams;

I have spread my dreams under your feet;

Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Sami Abualhaija

Imam Shafi'I

If the lion doesn't leave his den he can't hunt, and if the arrow doesn't leave the bow it won't strike,
If the sun stood still in its course then people, Arab and non-Arab, would become bored,
Gold dust is as the earth thrown in its places, and oud is a type of firewood in its ground,
If one travels this, his ambition is honored. If one travels this, he is honored like gold.
