A QUARTER MILLENNIUM OF TRADITION

Semmelweis University’s history started 250 years ago in 1769, when Queen Maria Theresa added a medical faculty to the University of Nagyszombat. Semmelweis University is the oldest medical school in Hungary still in operation today. With its 6 faculties and as a university specialising in health sciences, it occupies a prestigious place in Hungarian medical higher education. Its main commitment is based on the integrity of education, research and healthcare, which make Semmelweis University an internationally renowned centre of knowledge. Its 250th anniversary is marked by a unique series of events under the direct professional management of the Rector.

A historical outlook on the university’s highlights has been put together for the 250th anniversary, showcasing the most notable events of the university’s quarter millennium.

„THE ANNIVERSARY IS A MILESTONE”

According to Dr. Béla Merkely, Rector making the anniversary’s message known and understood by everyone at the university and outside of it, is of utmost importance.

"The anniversary is a milestone giving us the opportunity to lay the foundations for the University that we want to build in the next quarter millennium"

, he said in an interview about the anniversary.

In the interview, the Rector emphasised that the 250th anniversary of Semmelweis University has to reinforce the development strategy of “Semmelweis top 100”. The anniversary will fundamentally change the next quarter millennium, as a major curriculum reform of medical education is underway in agreement with the University of Szeged, the University of Pécs and the University of Debrecen.

 

At the top of university rankings

Semmelweis University possesses prestigious place in domestic and international rankings as well. According to HVG’s ranking Semmelweis University is the top higher education institution in the country based on aggregate student and staff excellence. Numerous programmes at the various faculties earned a top place in the rankings per specific field. Almost a third of the ca. 11,000 students are international who came to Budapest from 78 countries of 5 continents.

Professionals with the most insightful and thorough knowledge in molecular sciences are trained at the faculty, who upon the completion of the course have an ample variety of jobs to choose from, ranging from those of at pharmacies to the pharmaceutical industry.

András Pető Faculty

The mission of the Institute of Conductive Development of the András Pető Faculty, Budapest, is to provide assistance to children and young adults with motor disabilities originating from damage to the central nervous system.
