Lost in Hungary? Join the SH Mentor Network!

Studying and living abroad can feel exciting—but also confusing at times, but you don’t have to navigate everything on your own. The Stipendium Hungaricum Mentor Network (SHMN) is here to help you connect with others, feel supported, and make the most of your time in Hungary. And if you’ve been here for a while, you can even become a mentor and guide newcomers on their journey.

01 December 2025

Established in 2018 by the National Union of Students in Hungary (HÖOK), the network helps Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders with the practical and personal challenges of moving abroad—from handling paperwork to adjusting to a new academic and cultural environment. Senior student mentors provide personalized guidance, everyday support, and opportunities to participate in cultural and educational activities, helping newcomers feel confident and connected as they begin their studies in Hungary. Joining the mentor network also provides a safety net—ensuring you never feel alone during your time in Hungary.

To learn how the network supports students like you, we spoke with Fanni Barkóczi, Programme Coordinator of SHMN and presenter of the Alumni Hungary Webinar in November, and Éva Vincze, Executive Officer of HÖOK SHMN.

How does being part of the SH mentor network help both mentors and mentees grow?

The SHMN mentor network offers a supportive environment where both mentors and mentees can grow personally and academically. Mentors strengthen essential skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, intercultural communication, and leadership through real-life interaction with international students. Mentees gain reliable guidance on everything from administrative tasks to cultural integration, allowing them to feel more confident and settle into life in Hungary more smoothly. The mutual learning environment helps both sides broaden their perspectives and build long-lasting connections.

Are there specific examples of how mentoring has helped mentees in their studies and careers?

Yes. Many mentees have shared that support with administrative procedures (like residence permits, university registration, or housing issues) and cultural adjustment has allowed them to focus fully on their studies. Some mentees later became mentors themselves, crediting their mentors’ advice for helping them navigate university life, find student jobs or internships, and build early professional networks. Several have stayed in touch with their mentors, using their guidance as a stepping stone for academic success and career development.

Do you have a favourite moment or story from your time working with people in the network?

A memorable moment was when our community organized an international dinner night, where mentees from different countries shared their traditional foods, music, and stories. The event turned into a night of bonding, where everyone learned something new about each other's cultures and formed lasting friendships. This experience highlighted the unique and enriching cultural connections that the mentor network fosters, making it a favourite memory for those involved.

What impact does the mentor network have on host institutions and local communities?

The mentor network supports the integration of international students, helping them become more comfortable in their new environment, which, in turn, fosters a more inclusive and culturally diverse community within host institutions. The network offers cultural trips, educational programs, workshops on intercultural communication, money and time management, and learning strategies, alongside community engagement activities. There are also special events like the Annual Stipendium Hungaricum Banquet and Mentor Factor which are wonderful opportunities for the community to celebrate, connect, and have fun together.
