The Alumni Network Hungary Team and the International Alumni Volunteers
The presenter of this year’s last alumni webinar was Gergely Fazekas, who is a musicologist and an associate professor at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. He held a fantastic and deeply engaging presentation, where participants could learn a lot about the traditions as well as the current trends of Hungarian music from the early Middle Ages to the contemporaries, including world-famous composers such as Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály, György Ligeti or György Kurtág. We asked him about his motivation for being a musicologist and a teacher as well as about the peculiarities of Hungarian music.

The time has come to introduce our international alumni volunteer team with 34 people from 17 countries speaking 23 different languages. In the next chapter of our volunteer series, you can read Ayaz Shaikh’s story from India! He earned his MSc in Food Safety and Quality Engineering from the University of Debrecen during 2016-2018. Whereas He recently got the opportunity to continue his doctoral studies at the same institute from 2020.
Dr. Gábor Kemenesi, a key virologist at the National Laboratory of Virology in Pécs, and a member of Hungary’s COVID-19 Task Force was the speaker of the Alumni Hungary Webinar series in November. He gave an exciting presentation on global pandemics and the consequences of the COVID-19 epidemic. We interviewed him about his research field and the role of communication in science.
As a result of international cooperation, gap-filling training modules have been created. This is SciComm4all, a set of freely accessible animated videos offering tips and presenting good practices for effective knowledge dissemination. Máté Varga, associate professor at the ELTE Institute of Biology, was among the creators.
Between 25 and 31 October, the Study in Hungary team, and the representatives of six Hungarian universities visited Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to strengthen the long-existing relations between Vietnam and Hungary. In both cities, the delegation took part in education - and alumni events to promote Hungarian study opportunities and to further develop connections with Vietnamese alumni who graduated in Hungary recently or long ago. In the next chapter of our volunteer series, you can read Anna Brjezovskaia’s story from Georgia! She is pursuing her MA degree at Eötvös Loránd University in the field of International Relations (IR), with a specialization in security studies. She is an International Relations Expert with a BA from ELTE University. Currently, Anna is an ELTE University International Student Ambassador and Teaching Assistant.
The Covid-19 pandemic has shown us how diseases linked to globalization can completely change our society, economics, and our whole way of living. Extensive research in the field is key to prevention and treatment of present and future outbreaks, and proper communication of science can save millions of lives. At the next Alumni Hungary Webinar on 14 November, Dr. Gábor Kemenesi, a key virologist at the National Laboratory of Virology in Pécs will review the current and future situation of global epidemics and will present their internationally acclaimed research projects conducted in Pécs.
