Hungary becoming my new home

The time when I was leaving my home country and traveling abroad to a different culture and a different environment, I was little excited but at the same time, I was disheartened and missing my family and friends back in India.

Rashid Kassana and friends

I was lucky to meet an Indian student; Umais at the Budapest AirPort, and who was also traveling to Pecs. He assisted me while traveling and other paperwork in Hungary as well as the University administration. I stayed in a Dormitory, but it was very boring in the beginning because I didn’t have many friends and I always stayed in my room. I attended classes but it was difficult for me (because I missed some classes that had to be taken in the beginning) and it made me uneasy. I started wondering whether the syllabus was more difficult from here as compared to my country. I actually thought that I wasn’t qualified for my course.

I eat in different restaurants and I didn’t like the food much, I was becoming more and more disheartened and becoming weak and I began losing weight. At last, a moment came when I was planning to go back home when I meet some Pakistani students; Junaid, Shah, and Shahab. Fortunately, they were staying in the same dorm as I was, they motivated me, helped me in cooking and buying eating stuff. They treated me like a brother. I was happy but still disheartened by my study. Elders usually say, when God is with you everything will be alright, the same thing happened to me, with time everything was okay.

...I felt like Hungary was becoming my new home.

Later, I met with an Iraqi girl, Safaa in my faculty who was my senior, she helped a lot with my studies. I also meet some Hungarian student who helps in other paperwork and with time, I felt like Hungary was becoming my new home. I have since then made a lot of friends. Now I have a new large family here in Pecs, Hungary.

Moral Lesson

For the young students who would like to study abroad, like me, don’t be scared. Instead, believe in yourself, and be open to learning a different culture and meeting new friends as well.

Don’t be scared of asking for help from other people, even when they are from other backgrounds. Many times, there is always a nice person who is willing to help in case you have a problem.

In studies, never give up. Even when they seem so hard, you just have to work a little bit harder and smart; soon, you’ll begin to reap the fruits of your hard work.

From my experience back at home, I had this thought that we never had good ties and relationship with the Pakistani. I have made lots of Pakistani friends abroad, and they are really nice and helpful. We are great friends.
